Local councils are required by the NSW Disability Inclusion Act 2014 (DIA) to undertake a DIAP by July 1 and the Oberon plan has been developed through feedback from the community.
A recommendation was carried at Oberon Council's meeting that the draft DIAP be placed on public exhibition for 30 days to receive community feedback.
A report from Finance and Community Services director Lynette Safranek says personal choice and control is only possible when communities are inclusive of all people including people with disability. Real diversity is not achieved unless people with disability are provided with equal opportunity to participate in community life.
For the first time all levels of government across Australia have committed to a unified, national approach to improving the lives of people with disability, their families and carers through the development of the National Disability Strategy. In this strategy the state and federal governments have committed to an approach where the individual is the ‘centre’ of focus and not their disability.
In August 2014 the NSW Disability Inclusion Act 2014 was passed. This Act requires council to develop a DIAP to help remove barriers and enable people with disability to participate equally in their communities.
The purpose of the DIAP is to set out the strategies and actions that council will deliver to enable people with disability to have greater access to Council information, services and facilities.
The DIAP includes actions for all areas of council and will guide us in making our services and facilities more inclusive. Implementation of the actions in this plan will benefit many people in our community including the elderly and children.
The DIAP is underpinned by the principles which support the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2006) which include - focusing on abilities and not disabilities, fundamental rights for all people, genuine dialogue and participation, improving access and inclusion for all, prudent use of resources, recognising the benefits of collaboration, principles of universal design and access is everyone’s business.
The purpose of the public exhibition is to enable the community to provide feedback on council’s plan.
The DIAP is on council’s website and a copy can be viewed at council's administration office or the library.
