Once again Oberon had to reshuffle their normal run-on side prior to the kick-off. Oberon lost two starting props, but Dave Sellers stepped up to the front row spot and played an enormous game, winning the Oberon RSL Sub Branch man of the match award.
Right from the kick-off Oberon put immediate pressure on the bigger Lithgow outfit. The Oberon defence was brutal, pinning Lithgow down deep in their territory for long periods of time. Blake Fitzpatrick opened the scoring with a four-pointer right under the sticks after a darting and determined run close to the Lithgow line.
Oberon maintained the pressure in what was probably their best defensive effort so far. Both backs and forwards hit hard with captain coach Luke Branighan showing the Oberon faithful that not only is he an attacking maestro but he can certainly sting in defence as well.
Lithgow tried hard to get back on terms but Oberon was relentless. Blake Miller caused no end of trouble with scintillating runs and was rewarded with a two-try haul. After a great first half, Oberon led 14-0.
After a strong first half, Trent Rose and Blake Fitzpatrick were unable to take any further part in the game. While Oberon’s depth is being tested, they are fortunate to have Nathan Booth, Brian Maher and Tyler Hughes back up after playing first division. Oberon finished the job with a 26-14 victory.
Blake Ryan, who had a huge game standing in for the injured Luke Carpenter, also scored for the Tigers and was voted players’ player. Anton Wereta slotted over three conversions.
FIRST DIVISION
FIRST divison went down to the Workies 14-8 in a close fought game. Captain-coach Dallas Booth said the boys would be disappointed because they know that they can do a lot better – it all starts with training. Tyler Hughes’ effort saw him take out the players’ player and best and fairest awards.
WOMEN'S TAG
THE league tag side tried valiantly right to the end but were no match for the Lithgow girls, going down 52-0. Shannon Fisher was voted best and fairest and Jess Ryan took out the players’ player award.
This Sunday the Tigers take on the Mudgee Dragons with the league tag starting at 10.30am and the premier league at 2.15pm.
