Family, friends and Oberon RSL Sub Branch members are saddened by the news that Bruce Stevenson passed away last Friday surrounded by his family.

Mr Stevenson, aged 96, was the oldest surviving member of the 19th battalion that were in the Australian Army training camps at Cowra at the time of the Japanese POWs’ great breakout in 1944.
In August 2014, Mr Stevenson returned to Cowra to meet a surviving Japanese POW, Teruo Muralami, who took part in the breakout.
Mr Stevenson served in the Australian Army for 18 months and was medically discharged due to his asthma. Tributes have been posted on Facebook, many saying what a gentleman he was.
Oberon RSL Sub Branch president Bill Wilcox said Mr Stevenson was well respected and will be missed.
