The late withdrawal of strike players Jackson Brien and Blake Fitzpatrick meant that the Tigers had to reshuffle the run-on team. To make matters worse, they lost their speedy, scheming hooker Luke Carpenter with injury after five minutes of play.
Cowra teams are always hard to handle and the contest was willing. The Magpies opened the scoring early in the game and it was clear that, with the evergreen Warren Williams directing play, Cowra meant business.
It’s fair to say that Oberon’s timing on the day was out, but they managed to strike back not long after to level the scores. The Tigers forwards then proceeded to charge into the Cowra pack and start to dominate, which helped the backs, led by captain/coach Luke Branighan, to start posing some threats.
After a great battle that had the crowd on their feet, Oberon was victorious 30-20. For Oberon, Blake Miller, Cody Godden, Daniel Qoriniasi, Trent Rose and Dave Sellers scored tries, with Anton Wereta kicking three goals.
First division continued their great early season form, winning 32-16 in a fiery match. Coach Dallas Booth has a big squad and the talent is there to go all the way. Nathan Booth and Lochie Gilmore scored two tries each.
The under 18s went down valiantly, while the league tag girls were on fire, winning 20-18. The Oberon Tigers will play Lithgow Workies at home on Sunday as the Group 10 season continues.
