Minister for Justice Michael Keenan and Federal Member for Calare Andrew Gee have announced that the funding agreement to deliver seven new high-resolution digital closed-circuit television cameras in the main retail area of Oberon has been finalised.
Mr Gee said $25,000 in funding has been authorised under Safer Streets Round Two for Oberon Council to carry out the project, which will also include a full high-definition recorder to be installed in the council offices.
“CCTV can assist in enhancing perceptions of safety, deterring criminal or anti-social behaviour and apprehending those responsible for crime in our community,” Mr Gee said.
Minister Keenan said only safe communities can be strong and prosperous, and the best way to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour is to prevent it from happening.
“All Australians have the right to feel safe and secure in their community and Andrew Gee has worked hard to deliver this funding for the Oberon community,” he said.
“Most importantly, though, these funds are from the Proceeds of Crime Account – that is money taken from criminals and reinvested into preventing more crimes.
“Our Government is delivering on its commitment to assist communities to deliver local solutions to crime hot-spots and anti-social behaviour.”
Oberon mayor Kathy Sajowitz said Oberon Council is committed to maintaining a safe environment for its residents and is pleased to have received the funding, which will be matched on a dollar-for-dollar basis by council.
“The upgrade of the current system will greatly assist police to monitor and curb any criminal or anti-social behaviour and ensure that our community feels safe,” Cr Sajowitz said.
“Oberon is fortunate enough to enjoy a low crime rate and this grant will assist in maintaining that situation into the future.”
