The early sunshine on Saturday morning encouraged our members to turn out for a good day’s golf. The largest field for some time played an 18 hole stableford event.
Dennis O'Connell relished the conditions and had an easy win with a solid round of 39 points. The runner-up in A grade on a countback was Kyall Ryan who had an eagle on the par five 16th hole. Peter Ryan, after a winter lay-off, showed he hadn't forgotten how to play the game. Peter had a wonderful round of 40 points to be well clear of the rest of the B graders. Kevin Whalan was the runner-up with 34 points.
Nearest the pin on the first and the seventh went to Barry Lang, Adrian Poulten was closest on the ninth and Kyall Ryan was just 1.6 metres from the 17th.
Balls went to Barry Lang, Alan Cairney, Bob Slattery and Anthony McGrath.
A crew of four keen Oberon golfers travelled to Leura on Sunday to play the Blue Mountains District Championships. They started in the rain and finished wet and cold in the rain only to find that the officials had decided to call the event off and play it on October 16.
The crew thought they could have been notified a little earlier in the round. Nevertheless, they had an enjoyable round even though the scores were not flattering.
Golf next Saturday will be an 18 hole par event.
