Sixty-eight young people were honoured with the Fred Hollows Humanity Award at NSW Parliament House, including three from Oberon.
The award recognises year six students who follow in Fred Hollows’ footsteps by showing care and compassion for others.
“The response to the award has been incredible with children from 55 schools across the state nominated. It was wonderful to meet so many young people making a positive difference,” founding director Ms Hollows said.
Cheyan Cooper-Beattie from Oberon Public was honoured following a nomination from her school principal Bronwyn Ingersole.
Cheyan diligently raises the Australian flag at school each day, and in her effort to raise awareness and funds for the Alopecia Organisation she had her hair cut and raised nearly $2000.
“Cheyan is a deeply caring student who demonstrates true altruism on a daily basis,” Ms Ingersole said.
Lauren Evans of St Joseph’s was honoured for her compassionate heart and service to the school following a nomination from teacher Pam Dellow.
“Lauren is extremely polite and well-mannered; she never fails to say good morning, good afternoon, thank you, and even ‘bless you’ if someone sneezes,” Mrs Dellow said.
Fellow St Joseph’s Catholic School student Annabel Burgess was also honoured for her dedication and compassion towards her school community.
Annabel is an active leader as vice-captain, representing the school at ANZAC Day services and community functions and speaking at school masses.
“She willingly cares for the younger students and makes their transition to big school so much easier.” Mrs Dellow said.
Ethan Bellman from Croppa Creek Public School in northern NSW was selected as the NSW Junior Ambassador for The Foundation. He has chosen to allocate $5000, donated by Specsavers, to The Fred Hollows Foundation’s Kenya program.
