Mitchell competes in the Australian Boxing League (ABL), and he was matched against Justin Shirdon from Armidale.
For Mitchell, the Cobar fight represented the best performance of his career to date, having first begun to dabble in boxing around five years ago. He also hopes he can take some lessons from it.
“I think in the four previous fights I’d been a bit stupid with the way I approached them, I’d taken on people with very short notice and not really done myself justice,” he said.
“This time around I had an excellent camp leading into it, a few months of training, and it paid off.”
Mitchell’s next bout is on this Saturday night at the Paddy’s Hotel for the Women at War charity fight night.
“I still don’t know who I’m actually fighting this weekend. It might be slightly different to Cobar though. I fought at heavyweight out there even though I weighted in seven kilos lighter than the 91 for that class,” he said. “This time around I’ll get to fight at cruiserweight.
“I think the short turnaround is good, it means you keep a bit of momentum and take that good preparation forward for another couple of weeks.”
State titles were also contested at Cobar and another Oberon export, David Sellers, narrowly went down on points in a very close contest after going the distance.
