The track When She’s Drinkin’ had garnered enough downloads within hours of its release on Sunday to see it surpass songs by the likes of artists Keith Urban and Dolly Parton.
The musician gained a lot of attention after winning the 2015 Toyota Star Maker competition. Part of the prize was the opportunity to record an album.
He had no idea the single would be so popular and said it was because of his fans, not himself, that it reached number one.
“A lot of thanks has to go to the people in Bathurst and Oberon who come to my gigs,” he said.
When the song was released on Sunday, the Oberon talent was boarding a plane in Darwin. By the time he arrived in Sydney a few hours later, the song was already topping the Australian charts.
The various iTunes charts are updated every half-hour based on sales, and 24 hours later, When She’s Drinkin’ was still on top.
“[The song] wiped Taylor Swift off and Luke Bryan and Little Big Town – which are all really big American artists,” he said.
“We are lucky that Australians support Australian music.”
The track has dropped to number three on the charts, but the Oberon talent is just pleased to still be on the list at all as most songs drop dramatically within a few days.
He is currently working on his debut album and plans to release it at the Gympie Muster in late August.
