Mr McMahon was a long-serving councillor who first elected in 1983.
After his first four-year term he took an eight-year break before being re-elected at the 1995 local government elections.
He remained on council ever since to clock up a total of 24 years' service as a councillor.
Mr McMahon was first elected deputy mayor in 2006 and held this position until September 2012 when he was elected unopposed as mayor.
Mr McMahon was then returned as mayor unopposed in 2013 and 2014.
He will be remembered as a tireless fighter for his community and a dogged opponent of moves to force the small council to amalgamate.
Even this week he had been active in local affairs, organising a community meeting to be held in Oberon on Friday to discuss plans to change the delivery of Meals on Wheels from a daily to weekly service.
No funeral arrangements have yet been confirmed.
