We had a good field of golfers for the first round on Saturday. Good conditions contributed to some good scores, although some did struggle with the pace of the greens and some difficult pin positions.
We played the second round of the championships on Sunday, again with a reasonably good field of golfers.
After the first two rounds, the top four players in each grade are:
A grade: John McKinnon 155, Rob McGrath 156, Robert Hayden 158 and Barry Lang 162.
B grade: Scott Rowlandson 165, Tim Crichton 170, Adrian Poulten 173, and Marty Hotham 175.
C grade: Billy Gascoigne 169, Eric Whalan 176, Terry Robinson 180 and Darren Gordon 183.
In C1, Sean Mooney with 179 is leading Chris Lord on 184.
These players are all seeded to play at the following times on Saturday: A grade 11am, B grade 11.15am and C grade 11.30am. C1 will follow these groupings.
There is plenty of golf left in the championships and the leaders will not want to look over their shoulder or they will see other contenders sneak past.
The stroke event on Saturday was sponsored by long-time championships supporter Peter Dale.
Bart Fitzpatrick won A grade with a great round of 83/68, and Scott Rowlandson was not far behind with his best round for some time of 81/69.
The B grade winner was Billy Gascoigne with a very good round of 85/67, and the runner- up was Wade Judd with 86/68.
Robert Hayden took the scratch ball for A grade with 77 off the stick and Billy Gascoigne took the B grade scratch ball with 85.
Eric Whalan had a very good day with the putter, only having 24 putts.
Nearest the pin on the first was Billy Gascoigne, who almost holed out in one.
Barry Lang was closest on the seventh, no one was close enough on the ninth to measure and Chris Lord won the 17th.
Marty Hotham was A grade winner on Sunday with 82/70, and Barry Lang was runner-up on a countback with 79/70.
B grade was won by Bill Gascoigne with 84/67, and Sean Mooney, with a good round of 87/68, was runner-up.
Tim Crichton was nearest the pin on the first and 17th, Kim Rawlings on the seventh and Scott Rowlandson on the ninth.
Balls went to Rob Hayden, Luke Christie Johnson, Dylan Harvey, Chris Lord, Sean Mooney, Terry Robinson, Eric Whalan, John McKinnon and Neil Whalan.
Members are reminded of the annual meeting at the end of April. We would like to see plenty of nominations for the various board positions.
