Cr Sajowitz moved that prompt and serious consideration be given to the purchase of a gravel pit with the intention of saving money on the procurement of gravel.
The motion was seconded by Cr John Morgan.
Cr Sajowitz called on council to investigate the purchase of a gravel pit in the area and bring back to council within two months the feasibility and cost analysis of where savings could be made through this course of action, and that an assessment of the gravel (product) be undertaken to determine its suitability.
Cr Sajowitz’s notice of motion is in light of the revelation that gravel has cost the council approximately $1 million per year for the past two years.
She said council needs to seriously investigate the procurement of gravel through the purchase of its own gravel pit.
Cr Morgan requested the exact value of past gravel purchases, saying this information needs to be given to councillors as soon as possible.
Cr Sajowitz’s motion stated there are opportunities open to Oberon Council at the moment to purchase a pit in the area.
She said it is understood that contractors in the region have been using product from this pit for road-making over a substantial period of time and in the current fiscal climate it is incumbent upon council to pursue cost savings where possible.
Cr Kerry Gibbons said a quarry pit purchase would depend on location and the quality of the gravel.
The motion was put to a vote and was carried.
