We saw it for Newcastle Knights’ player Alex McKinnon in the Rise For Alex round a week ago and for West Tigers’ Simon Dwyer, now it’s Mudgee’s turn to get behind one of their own.
Likeable Dragons player and resident Henry Fisher needs the community’s help.
On Sunday in the first division match between Mudgee and Bathurst St Pat’s, Fisher broke his neck in what seemed to be a normal regulation tackle.
Fisher was escorted off the field before he was taken to hospital where it was discovered he had fractured his neck.
He is scheduled to be put in a halo brace on Tuesday night and the possibility of surgery in a few months.
When the news of Fisher’s injury broke on Facebook on Sunday night, the community spirit leapt into action.
On Monday, messages of support for the popular community-man flooded social media.
Fisher’s wife Tanya took to Facebook to thank everyone for their support.
“Would like to express our sincere gratitude for all the well wishes, offers of help and community support shown over the last couple of days,” Tanya wrote. “I’ve always known how popular Henry is around town but he is a little overwhelmed how loved he is. Thanks for keeping his spirits up!!”
To show their support for Henry and his family, the Mudgee Dragons will be holding a fundraising night.
The event will be held on Friday, August 15, at Club Mudgee.
Already people and businesses in the community have donated items and the Dragons are encouraging more of it.
A Facebook page has been created to support Fisher, which got close to 400 “Likes” by lunch time today.
For those wanting more information, they can “Like” the Henry Fisher’s road to recovery fundraising page on Facebook or contact Dragons’ secretary Kathy Lang on 0411 618 045.
