This was Daphne’s second party as she had dinner with friends and family last Saturday evening at Sunsets at Oberon which was attended by her daughter and great granddaughter, Heather and Emmerson, who travelled from Queensland for the momentous occasion.
Daphne is the mother and mother-in-law of the late Judy Brown and the late Norm Brown from Oberon; grandmother of Julianne Rowlandson and Kim Brown and great grandmother of Kurt and Nicole Rowlandson and Reece Finlay.
She has two other children, Noelle Baxter and Donald Dornan.
Born near Sarina in far north Queensland on July 9, 1913, Daphne grew up on her family’s sugar cane farm.
By the age of 20 the enterprising young woman was running her own dressmaking business.
Bank manager Alexander Dornan soon caught her eye and the couple married in 1936.
They transferred to Oberon from Wee Waa in 1954, living in the National Bank residence until 1962.
Two of Daphne and Alexander’s daughters were married in a double wedding ceremony in Oberon.
Judy married Norm Brown and Noelle married Don Baxter.
The couple’s son, Donald Dornan, was a boarder at Scots School in Bathurst and daughter Heather attended Oberon Public School.
After Alexander was transferred to Macksville for work the couple decided to retire to South West Rocks.
Daphne moved back to Oberon six months ago to live with her granddaughter Julianne.
A lady of many talents, Daphne only gave away golf and bowls at the tender age of 90 – but she still loves to garden.
Happy 101st birthday, Daphne. Enjoy your celebrations and we hope there are many more to come.
