Premier League Tigers have got back-to-back wins from round one and two after defeating Orange Hawks on Sunday.
After the way they played it is a strong statement that the boys are very much in contention for this year’s Group 10 trophy.
There was some doubt that the Tigers could win the game, and it was very courageous 23-22 victory.
The contest started with Hawks posting first points very early in the match. Oberon was quick to respond through backrower and captain Adam Powell, who ran a great line out wide to bring the Tigers back after Blake Fitzpatrick’s kick took the score to six a piece.
Minutes later Powell suffered a terrible knee injury as he buckled just before being tackled by a Hawks defender. Powell had to be taken from the field.
This delay saw Orange Hawks take back the momentum and minutes later Orange winger Jack Ryan crossed in the corner, and with the conversion Hawks 12 led the Tigers six.
Veteran half Steve Lane, with a neat chip-and-chase and a regather, sent Oberon’s fullback Tyler Hughes over under the post.
At 12-all the Tigers started to lift, and after a scrappy pass Steve Lane was able gather a loose ball, pass to lock Tom Kirby who went in for a try.
At 16-12 the Tigers hit the lead, but they were not done yet.
Just before the break exciting young centre Jackson Brien entered the frame busting the defence from 30 metres out, and with speed he took it around next to the posts for a scintillating try.
The conversion was good from Lane, and the Tigers went to the break leading 22-12.
In the second half, some great defence saw the boys stop plenty of attacking raids from the locals.
Players Joel Christie Johnston, Jackson Brien and Reece Finlay all came up with big plays and try-saving tackles, but eight minutes into the second half it was Hawks who posted first points as Mitch Hurford dived over from dummy half to narrow the score back to 22-16 Oberon’s way.
