The huge area of state forests pine plantations surround Oberon provides an ideal environment for exotic wood mushrooms – prized in Europe and coveted by top Sydney restaurants.
Late February to early May the Saffron Milk Cap (Lactarius deliciosus) and Slippery Jack (Boletus portentosus) emerge to be picked.
This year, because of dry weather conditions, mushrooms have been sparse but since the recent rains the forests are full.
Oberon Visitor Information Centre staff have a leaflet on mushroom picking and can give you directions to the best mushroom locations.
There are many colourful mushrooms and other fungi in the forest, all wonderful photographic subjects, but should not be eaten.
When picking table mushrooms, remember, ‘when in doubt, throw it out’.
