Oberon was originally known as Bullock Flat. In 1863 the village relocated to its current location and was proclaimed a village with the new name of “Oberon”.
I have spent most of my life in Oberon and during this time I have seen many changes in both the landscape and the community. I believe the most significant period of change occurred during 1948-1656 when mechanisation really began to come to Oberon and in particular to the farming industry.
I can recall the first bulldozers coming to the area and this led to a significant change in the landscape as vast quantities of uncleared scrub was cleared to become good quality grazing country.
Also during the last 50s and early 60s harvesting of hardwood timbre wound down and the Forestry Commission commenced planting large areas with Radiata pine. This change let to the development of the significant timber industry that is now a proud part of the Oberon community.
Throughout our history the people of Oberon have remained a proud and vital community and a large number of the early settlers to the district still have descendants represented in today’s society.
I would like to welcome you all to celebrate this great milestone in Oberon’s history.
Yours sincerely
Councillor John McMahon
Mayor
