Cheesemaker has Coolamon in mind
6:30 AM | THIRTEEN years of cheese-making history will come to an end this afternoon when Barry Lillywhite closes the doors to the Charles Sturt University cheese factory for the final time. But instead of walking away from the profession that has earned Mr Lillywhite national recognition, he will instead move on to his new project – establishing a cheese factory in Coolamon.

Griffith salons applaud state ban on solariums
6:30 AM | STATE government legislation to ban tanning beds has come too late for most of Griffith’s beauty salons – they’ve already moved on to safer tanning practices. The state government announced on Saturday it would introduce legislation to ban commercial solariums by the end of 2014, acknowledging the link between the units and skin cancer.

The predatory practice, widespread in the district, sees landlords prey on vulnerable harvest labour workers, many who have just arrived in the country or are working illegally.

6:00 AM | WITH the cotton harvest fast approaching, the construction of a cotton gin at Whitton is on track for an April deadline. It is expected the gin will be able to start receiving cotton on that date in what is tipped to be a bumper crop. In October last year, the development application, which was lodged by a consortium of cotton growers from the area, was unanimously approved by Leeton Shire Council.
Education boost
6:00 AM | THIS year 14 applicants were successful in receiving grants towards their costs for university and TAFE courses in 2012. These costs include such items as accommodation, travel, texts, internet fees, university student and amenities fee and specialist equipment.

Supporting the fundraiser to assist a group of local children to travel to Uluru to meet up with other Fusion Groups from all over Australia were the Commonwealth Bank, Coly Electrical, Hi-Trac, Annie G’s, Coleambally Newsagency, Pasco Maintenance, Akazien Hof, Coleambally Auto, Tim’s Meats, Marilyn’s Pharmacy and the Coly Irrigation social club.
