THE Bathurst Tennis Centre played host to the best under 12s players NSW has to offer over the weekend as girls and boys teams contested the Jan O'Neill and Tony Roche cups respectively.
Twelve teams took part in both competitions. The Central West contingent was right in the thick of the action and put in a more than respectable performance.
The boys team, which included Josh Harvey – an Oberon junior who trains at the Bathurst centre – was strong in its competition and finished sixth of 12 sides behind eventual Tony Roche Cup winners South-East.
The girls team didn't let themselves down either, finishing seventh. The Jan O'Neill Cup was split between Northumberland and a metropolitan outfit who contested the event. Bathurst's Gabby Mitton and another Oberon local and Bathurst centre player Caitlin Foley were part of the girls’ team.
"There was no rain and we got through all our matches which was good," Bathurst Tennis Centre manager Andrew Mitton said.
"I think it was a pretty good effort from the Western teams to finish where they did considering the level of competition – across both tournaments we had seven metropolitan teams taking part, so it was a pretty high standard.
"The quality on show was very good, extremely strong.
“There were a few of the very top-notch boys missing from that competition but apart from that both the girls and boys had basically the best line-up there could be."
