 Tough Oberon win

Tough Oberon win

18 May, 2009 12:58 PM
THE JELD-WEN, Oberon Quarries Tigers took on St Pat’s at the Jack Arrow football complex in Centennial Coal Cup competition at the weekend.

The match soon developed into a torrid encounter, particularly in the forwards.

After three minutes a well-timed pass from Shane Green sent Shaun O’Neill over in the corner. The big fullback left a couple of would be defenders in his wake, score 4 nil.

Oberon’s solid defence in the forwards was taking its toll on St Pat’s who were finding it hard to make ground.

Big runs by Nathan Booth, Adam Cosgrove, Scott Brennan and Luke Christie-Johnston were punching big holes in the opposition defence. This paved the way for the next try scored by Dallas Booth and the kick was successful and the Tigers led 10-0 after 15 minutes.

In the 30th minute a penalty to St Pat’s didn’t find the line and the ball swooped up by the ever reliable winger Micky Gibbons who charged 50m down the sideline beating several players before scoring in the corner. Tigers led 14-0.

Tyson Robinson came off the bench and continued the pressure on the opposition by stripping the ball with a one on one tackle putting the Tigers back on the attack.

Tyson had a great game, setting an example for all bench players to take opportunities when they are presented. Tigers have a very strong team this year.

Penalties against the Tigers unsettled the mountain men and Pat’s slipped over the line on half time to bring the score to 14-6.

The whistle blower again had a lot of practice in the early part of the second half which frustrated the boys in the Black and Gold. This led to St Pat’s levelling the score to 14-14.

However the heavy forward clashes eventually caught up with the blue and whites and the Tigers went on a scoring spree rattling up 28 points in the last 20 minutes. Tries to Shaun O’Neill in the 60th minute, John McGrath 63rd, Dallas Booth 71st, and a great run by Tyson Robinson in the 76th minute, Herb O’Bernier 79th minute, with 2 conversions to Dallas Booth, 2 for Shaun O’Neill completed the scoring.
