The JeldWEN Hexion Oberon Tigers got their 2008 senior campaign off to the best possible start on the weekend when they took out the Mid West pre-season Centennial Coal knockout competition held in Kandos.
Ahead of their debut in the competition after three seasons in Group 10, the three wins on Saturday provided good impetus for the side to carry into the season proper, which starts on ANZAC Day.
In what was described by several observers as a scrappy affair, Oberon defeated Lithgow Bears 10-8 in their opening game, before a more comfortable victory over the Gulgong Terriers (20-12) in the semi final.
Their opponents – Portland Colts – had defeated Blackheath and Wallerawang on their way to the decider, but met a committed Tigers side hungry for the win, the Oberon side eventually holding on to win 12-nil.
Supporters will be hoping that the final scoreline will be an omen when the two sides square off in a rematch on ANZAC Day in Portland for the season opener.
“The boys played well, and the defence was great throughout the day,” said club official Kerry Gibbons.
“Trevor Long (Tigers 5-8 and captain) was outstanding, but all the boys played well and really put in a good effort.”
Speaking after the final, Mr Gibbons thanked the teams’ sponsors, and particularly the Oberon RSL for their continued support.
Interest is also continuing to grow for the Tiger’s centenary of league celebrations to be held next month, with plenty of local businesses reportedly getting behind the event.
