The Oberon Tigers travelled to Wallerawang last Saturday taking on the Warriors in the final game of the first round of Group 10 Centennial Coal Cup.
The Tigers started hard and fast with the big men up front running all over the Wang forwards, eating up the metres through the middle. It took only five minutes for the Tigers to score – centre Tyler Hughes crossed for a four-pointer on the break of a strong set of six up the middle. With a strong breeze behind the Tigers ran away with the first half, five tries to nil.
Shaun O'Neil had a field day converting all five first half tries, one absolute pearla of a kick from out on the left touch line with a gusting wind behind him. Half time score 30-nil, Tigers ‘way.
Oberon came out for the second half confident of running the score board well past the half century. Continuing on with the first half game plan of the ball control, the big men just continued to run all over the top of the Warriors’ defence. Nathan Booth was rewarded for continued hit up the middle, busting through the first line of defence than running over the top of the second line to cross adjacent to the past for yet another four-pointer. Busting runs up the centre from Luke Christie Johnston, then off loads to the support runners, sparked some great second-phase football from the Tigers, resulting in some spectacular team tries.
Oberon’s defence, especially our little men in the back row – Jack Fitzpatrick, Tim Cooper, Evan Roberts – and the cover defence of outside backs, Tyler Hughes, Shane Christie Johnston and Dallas Booth, kept the Warriors on their back foot. The Wang boys crossed the line only once.
Final score: Oberon Tigers 54 – Dallas Booth 2, Luke Hayden 2, Shane Christie Johnston 1, Tyler Hughes 1, Leighton Roberts 1, Shaun O'Neil 1, Jack Fitzpatrick 1, Nathan Booth 1. Goals: Shaun O;Neil 5, Luke Hayden 2.
Wallerawang 6 – Stephen McCann 1, Goal Brendon Dowler 1.
