Solid win put Tigers on top

15 Jul, 2010 10:50 AM
OBERON Tigers held off a determined second-half challenge to defeat the Lithgow Bears 20-18 on Saturday, joining them on top of Centennial Coal Cup points ladder.

Tigers scored the first three tries while Bears could only manage two in the first half of the match played at Lithgow and watched by a good roll-up of supporters.

With the Tigers kick-off a powerful tackle by Jack Fitzpatrick gave the big Bears side a taste of things to come. The Tigers struck first with Shane Christie Johnston outwitting the Bears’ defence for an opportunistic try.

The Tigers responded to the strong, hard defence from the Bears with some strong runs. Evan Roberts and Johnny McGrath both gained turf for Oberon in a phase which led to a Cheyne Barker try.

The Tigers displayed a great team effort throughout the game matching the fierce defence and attack of the Bears.

Johnny McGrath was rewarded with a try for his strong efforts after launching to the line.

In the first few minutes of the second half the Tigers appeared to lose a little direction, and the Bears managed to slip through for a quick try which levelled the score.

The Tigers again started to gather momentum and gained possession after a mistake from the Bears just minutes from full time.

A strong Oberon effort then resulted in a try for Dallas Booth close to the touchline.

That again levelled the score at 18-all and put the pressure right on Shaun O'Neil for a successful conversion.

Shaun displayed concentration and skill to land the kick and lead the Tigers to a 20-18 victory.

Next week the Oberon Tigers will play Kandos at the Kandos home ground.

Kick-off will be at 2:30pm and the Tigers are hoping there will be plenty of Oberon supporters there for the match.
