Senior league crisis meeting this week

11 Feb, 2010 08:15 AM
After a glorious history on the paddock and a successful season in 2009, it is a real possibility that there will be no senior league team in Oberon for the coming football season.

Organisers and coaches will hold crisis talks this week to decide whether Oberon can field an under 18s and senior team this year.

Local players moving to other clubs to chance their luck playing premier league, commitment to apprenticeships and shift work have thinned the available player numbers for the senior team.

President of the football club Ian Christie-Johnston said that Oberon has until the end of February to register a full team.

"We need players to commit by the end of February or we won't be able to fill a side," he said.

Training sessions have been held for the past two weeks, and much to the organisers' disappointment, sessions have been very scarcely attended.

Organisers have made it very clear that if players do not turn up, group 10 will be officially notified that Oberon Tigers cannot field a team in 2010 in division one.

The under 18s are also short on players. A handful of players have been training hard, and their coach Darrin Hotham has commented on the great effort shown by the eight or nine under 18 players who always turn up to training.

But the small number of players willing to attend training leaves a lot to be desired.

Officials warn that that if this Friday night's training session is not well attended, the Under 18s team will not play in the group 10 competition this season.

The football season begins in mid March, and Christie-Johnston said that players need to make a commitment to playing in the Tigers' colours. "We need to know names and numbers. Get along to training and get registered," he said. Training is held on Tuesday and Friday evenings from 6pm.
