THE MCF Engineering and Shell Oberon Under 18 Tigers went down 30-6 to Lithgow Workies on Saturday but with even luck the result would have been much closer.
The kick-off at Oberon Sportsground saw Blake Fitzpatrick receive the ball and sprint 30 metres before he was pulled down by the Workies defence. Bill Maloney was fired up, giving his team-mates plenty of encouragement throughout the match.
Workies had plenty of possession in the first five minutes and were soon in for an early try. Kirk Roberts was quick in defence and executed some great tackles. Dave Sellers made several charges through the Workies’ defence and was rewarded when he scored the only try for Oberon.
Tim Cooper made three memorable tackles in a row and worked hard all game. Jake Coles was it difficult for Lithgow to reach the try line – his defence and attack was spot on. Jake’s heart is as big as the footy field. Well done Jake! Blake Fitzpatrick and Kirk Roberts made several breaks and were unlucky not to score.
Reece Finlay tried hard all game. He played excellent football but Workies had him marked and gave him little room to move. Scott Hoolihan, Jim Long, Tim Cooper and Jake Cummins made ground time-and-time-again, but couldn’t breakthrough.
Tigers went into the second half trailing 20-6 and they new they had a lot of work to do to even the board.
Workies again had most of the possession and it wasn’t long before Bill Maloney had to made a huge try-saving tackle after a Workies players sprinted down the sideline. Steven Cook, Blake Miller, Matt Callan and Dylan Downey put in huge efforts as
they tried to counter Oberon’s lack of possession. They never gave up maintaining their strong defence throughout the match.
