01 Jul, 2010 09:49 AM
The second round of the Centennial Coal Cup, kicked off last Saturday night under lights at Carrington Park, with the mighty Tigers defeating Villages United 28-12.

The game started with Johnny McGrath making a big first big tackle which showed Villages just what the Tigers were made off. However early mistakes from the Tigers saw Villiages find a gap out wide to score.

In the first half the Tigers had to push hard in attack and defence and the frustrations of both sides had to settle before they could concentrate on playing the game. With two tries against them Tigers pulled themselves together with Luke Christie Johnston and Evan Roberts making several breaks, supported by Darren Hotham, who soon crossed the line for a four pointer.

A bustling run up the centre from Brian Maher saw the ball go to Cheyne Barker the on to Johnny McGrath who cross the line for the Tigers – half-time score: Villages 12,Tigers 8.

In the second half the Tigers were a lot more settled and made fewer mistakes. Shane Christie Johnston, Tyler Hughes and Jack Fitzpatrick showed their ability with some great play. Luke Hayden,Nathan Booth, Marty Hotham, Scott Hawkin and Tim Cooper were a good combination making good ground. Tigers’ tempers flared after some questionable tackles and Brian Maher and Marty Hotham were both in the sin bin for 10 minutes.

With Oberon's three tries to nil in the second half saw the mountain men on top.

Tries: Darren Hotham 2, Johnny McGrath 1, Shane Christie Johnston 1, Luke Christie Johnston 1, Tyson Robinson 1. Goals: Tyler Hughes.
