Most of us would be slightly afraid to take on the mighty Mount Panorama with little between us and a ruthless race track, but there are youngsters among us, like Lochlan Dwyer, that do not shy away from fear.
Lochlan Dwyer, a Year 10 student from St Joseph’s Cental School, represented his school at the Bathurst Billycart Derby on Mount Panorama, racing a fantastic billycart he and his classmates had made from scratch, sponsored and assisted by Jeld-wen Fibre of Australia.
Lochlan took to the famous race track like a duck to water, winning his first two heats before advancing to the grand final on the Sunday afternoon. There were many thrills and spills, but not Lochlan, who faced the final race against one other competitor, and after an exciting race, was victorious in winning the Schools Challenge at the Australian Neighbourhoods at Play Billycart Derby.
Lochlan won a wonderful trophy for his school, but is still very modest about his win.
Lochlan said he has a little experience driving a Billycart, but despite the speeds they seem to reach at times, he said it’s not fast and has ambitions to try out the track in a speedier vehicle.
“I’d like to do it in a faster car,” he said.
Who knows, he may be one day in the Bathurst 1000!
