There were familiar faces among the sea of runners swarming through Sydney during the annual Sun Herald City2Surf earlier this month.
A team from Oberon Farm Meats – made up of Darren Ball, Luke Betts, Kaitlyn Crook and Gaby Fisher-Smith – proudly wore their Oberon shirts as they joined 80,000 entrants in the iconic race in its 40th year.
Darren said this was his sixth City2Surf but that he had competed in it for 12 years, so some training was needed to prepare him for the 14-kilometre run from the Sydney CBD to Bondi Beach.
The starting guns were fired by the Premier, inaugural City2Surf winner Ken Moore, Olympian Grant Hackett and Sun-Herald Acting Editor, Liz Hannan.
The Oberon Farm Meats team left in the fifth group.
Darren's training apparently paid off, as he crossed the line in only an hour and a half, and was the first to cross the finish line for his team.
Darren said it is an amazing experience to run in this year’s big race.
“The atmosphere just blows you away,” he said.
“You forget how long it is because there is just so much to look at.”
Darren said that the City2Surf is an experience that more locals should have a go at.
“If you have never done it, you really should try it,” he said.
