Riders score well

OBERON Pony Club members performed well at the Zone Three Sporting and Campdrafting Championships held at the Cudal Showgrounds on August 17. The Sporting events involved playing eight games. Eleven Oberon members competed in five different age groups.and all scored well.

Mikala Sherlock was Champion for her age group and the Zone Three Sporting Champion.

Brendan Luther was the Reserve Champion.

The afternoon Campdraft provided plenty of excitement and lots of challenges for competitors.

Campdrafting has its origins in the early days of the Australian stockman, and is believed to have begun in rural Queensland in the early part of the 20th century.

Campdrafting events are conducted in a set of yards attached to an arena. Competitors are required to cut out a beast from the yard and follow it through an open gate into the arena. Competitors then guide the beast around a course before putting it through a gate, all in a few short minutes.

Points are scored by horse and rider for cut out, horse work and course completion, from a possible total of 100. The top score was the winner in each age group.

Kiara Hopwood and Damien Stapleton gained placings in their respective age groups.

Oberon Pony Club meets on the first Sunday of the month and the club welcomes new members and their families. Rally days are designed to cover all aspects of riding. There is a canteen available on the day for lunch.

Pony Club exists to offer children and young adults to the age of 25 the opportunity to learn the skills of riding and general horsemanship and to compete at state, national and international events.

Please come along or telephone Kay and George Whalan on 6335 8434.
