Oberon in the groove in touch grand final

11 Mar, 2010 08:07 AM
A double to Kendal Kirkwood has helped Cut N Groove to a 3-1 win over Kelso Hotel in Bathurst District Touch Association women’s grade grand final at Learmonth Park on Sunday.

The Oberon-based team proved too strong in treacherous conditions and was able to get on top of their previously undefeated rivals.

Cut N Groove captain Clair Gibbons scored an early try and team-mate Kendal Kirkwood added another midway through the game.

That sparked Kelso back to life and Jess Hotham was finally able to break through for her team’s first point.

It looked like that would be the turning point as Kelso continued to attack the Cut N Groove line but a second try to Kirkwood late in the game was enough for Cut N Groove to secure the win.

“We had a great game considering the wet conditions – we had a few drops but apart from that we played well,” Gibbons said after the match.

“We were pretty confident coming in with a full side, we had plenty of subs.

“The rain affected us a little – it slowed things down and we couldn’t play our normal game but other than that it was good. Normally we would do a lot more big passes but we had to play a shorter passing game but we played pretty well considering it hasn’t stopped raining.”

Gibbons said her side made the most of the conditions while restricting the quickest Kelso Hotel players.

“They have plenty of pace, they have a few very speedy players but we managed to keep up with them,” she said.

“We have won [grand finals] in previous years and had pretty similar teams so we thought we had pretty good chance, and a good team.”

Bathurst Touch Football Association president Stuart Graham was pleased with another successful season that has seen the association establish itself at Learmonth Park with a new clubhouse.

“It was a good season, we have over 80 teams and it all went really well, apart from the weather on grand final day,” he said.

“We would like to thank everyone for the way they have played this year, there were no major major incidents. I’d also like to thank the council for their help and the sponsors of the teams, almost every team has a sponsor for their shirts or registrations.”

Graham is hoping to build on this success for next year but he said the competition needs more referees if it is going to keep growing.

“We would like to develop the fields a bit more, there are some that have low spots in them and the other thing we would like to do is increase the number of referees we have,” he said.

“We can easily fit nine fields in but we only did that once because we only had 11 regular referees.

“We have the potential to have up to 12 fields but we couldn’t do it without dramatically increasing the number of referees.”

“We may have to look at getting every team to nominate one player who will take the referees’ course to try and get more referees ...”
