JACK Rowlandson has topped off a terrific year on the campdraft circuit by competing at the Australian National Championships at the Tamworth Equine Centre at the end of January.
He had to finish among the top 25 junior riders in Australia in 2008 to gain entry to the prestigious Tamworth event.
Although he did not place at the championships the experience was invaluable.
Last weekend Jack travelled to Coolah where he was presented with a rug for being the Central West Junior rider of the year for 2008.
The win was a big surprise for Jack who competes against some extremely talented juniors in the Central West.
On the same weekend Jack managed to win the Coolah Junior draft against 35 of his peers on a horse called Lazy Axle.
The horse was kindly loaned to Jack by Peter and Lara Garlic of Orange.
Juniors can compete on two horses, so Jack usually rides his Australian Stock Horse mare Nel and Lazy Axle to gain his points.
This weekend Oberon will conduct its annual campdraft.
The event has not been run for a couple of years due to the drought and attempts to run an event in November and December last year had to be aborted due to rain.
Local farmers now joke that the draft should be scheduled more often to get the rain that is needed.
Jack will be competing on the weekend along with the Warrick Gold Cup Winner Chevin Ivory which is owned and ridden by husband and wife team Nigel and Karol Kable .
Admission to the ground will be free for spectators and the action starts at 7am each day.
Everyone is welcome to come along and have a look. For more information contact the secretary, Derelle, on 0429 630 053.
