OBERON’S Christine Turnbull competed in the Forgotten Valley Classic 160 kilometre endurance ride at St Albans over the June Long Weekend.
Christine is a member of the Central West Endurance Riders Club and the 160 kilometre event had to be completed in 24 hours. The talented horse/rider combination finished in just under 19 hours.
Both horse and rider had been in training for the ride since early January. Starting at 2am on the Sunday morning they travelled through the tough hilly terrain around the historic village of St Albans near Wisemans Ferry.
The pair were confronted with many challenges including 10 hours of riding in the dark, rain, fog and, at times, fatigue. Including breaks for vet checks she stepped off the horse at 12.30 am Monday morning a tired but elated rider. Turnbull says there are few sporting events which require a team to compete at this level of fitness for 24 hours.
Charlie, a tough stock horse/arab cross will now have about five months off and then he and Christine will be into a strict training regime with their sights firmly set on the Tom Quilty Gold Cup 160km event to be held in Manilla in June, 2010.
