In the Veterans’ golf Bathurstian Peter Shepherd headed the charge of his kin to take out the A Grade comp at Bathurst Golf Club on Monday, July 5 with a massive 41 points.
In B grade Richard Stazecki, also of Bathurst, took out the honours with a miserly 40 points.
Local knowledge was to the fore with 50 per cent of trophy winners coming from the host club. This is exactly the same percentage of local winners as recorded in the February Vets comp at Bathurst.
At most other clubs the locals contribute a much lower proportion than 50 per cent of the trophy winners. Thus the local knowledge at Bathurst is of a higher standard than elsewhere, which means foreign Vets will have to put in more study before fronting Bathurst in the future.
Other trophy winners from Bathurst were: Bob Hoffman (38), Terry O’Connor (38), Dick Domarachi (37), Bill Dickie (37), Will Arnison (37) and Trevor Simmons (35).
Foreign winners who did their homework were: Dick O’Donnell (37) and Dick Northey (36) from Oberon; Neil Cashen (39) from Ex Services; and John Dubois (38), Barry Burcher (38) and Col Westcott (36) from Duntryleague;
The ladies’ event was won by Helen Jeuken. Jeuken, who is a regular winner on the ladies’ circuit had 33 points to outflank Marg Smith from Ex Services(32).
Closest to the pins: Marg Webb, Dick O’Donnell, Gus Pro, Ross Martin and popular Treasurer Arthur Fuller. Ashley Lamb arranged for an associate to pick up his closest to the pin trophy after he had left early only to find that a player in the last group knocked his approach to 5cm and bested Lambs great shot to 10 cm.
