Harnessing support for a good cause

28 Jan, 2010 08:11 AM
The Oberon community hosted their annual harness racing meeting at Bathurst on Wednesday, 13 January 2010.

The night was a resounding success with new and old sponsors and supporters making a return, whilst raising an unprecedented $5300 for Ronald McDonald House in Orange.

The fundraising for Ronald McDonald House in Orange was achieved by a trackside auction.

Auction items included eight fat lambs (auctioned separately) all packaged individually and supplied by local farmer Wayne Maher. The lambs were presented by Wayne Barker of Barkers Butchery and the eskys were provided by Mawhoods IGA.

Sporting memorabilia including a framed 1998 State of Origin Jersey signed by both teams which sold for $1700 and was purchased by Scott McAllister of the Knickerbocker Hotel.

In 2005 a committee was formed to raise funds for the establishment of a Ronald McDonald House in Orange that would be able to serve the region. Ronald McDonald House - Central West is a not for profit, fully incorporated body.

Since the committee has received regional support including proceeds from hundreds of fundraisers, support from McDonald’s franchisees and corporate donations.

Ronald McDonald House Charities Australia is also backing the Central West project and this year provided a $200,000 grant. They will also provide ongoing support.

To date over $1.4 million has been raised.

The cost of building the facility is estimated at $1.8 to $2 million. There is a long way to go but every bit helps.
