ON a brilliant night of racing for the Turnbull clan, it was another superb drive from Amanda Turnbull that led favourite Cosimo Bromac to a strong win in the $10,000 Oberon Cup at the Bathurst Paceway on January 13.
The six-year-old gelding won comfortably with Turnbull in the gig for The Lagoon trainer Mark Butler to claim the feature event on what was a packed card of racing.
In the process the son of Bettors Delight out of Clearly Visible took his career earnings to the brink of the $80,000-mark.
In an open betting race, it was Paul Sapio’s prolific six-year-old Panorama Swing who dictated terms most of the way, crossing from gate six at the start and taking up the running in the 2520-metre staying test.
The field walked through the first few laps – which cost Sapio a $100 fine afterwards – and completed two snail’s pace opening quarters of 33.5 and 33 seconds as Panorama Swing held sway, with outsider
Altai ($45) the nearest challenger as they went past the bell.
Turnbull had been hitherto happy to sit in third and take things easily before she spurred into action midway through the last circuit and began to make her move.
A third quarter of 28.9 strung out the field somewhat but $2.60 favourite Cosimo Bromac loomed large and took command of the race with relative ease as they straightened.
Once he found the front there was little his rivals could do but battle for the minors as he pulled away to win by almost six metres in a 2:05.50 mile rate.
Sapio guided Panorama Swing ($5) home for second with Butler also chiming in for third with Surfing Star ($15.30), driven by Mat Rue.
It was Cosimo Bromac’s 13th win in 50 starts along with 17 minors in what is becoming an increasingly impressive record, while it was the gelding’s first victory since a November 20 success at Harold Park.
