OBERON golf officials are hoping for fine weather and strong nominations when they stage the 50th Oberon Golf Open next weekend.
Five events will be contested across the weekend, including a mixed ambrose stableford event on Saturday December 6 followed by the main event on the Sunday.
Plenty of recent rain has freshened the course which had seen some hard times in recent years because of the the water situation in Oberon.
Club officials are now primed to show off their lush fairways and to attract some of the better golf talent from throughout the Central Tablelands.
Defending champion Todd McMahon is expected to lead a large contingent from Lithgow, while good numbers are also anticipated from of Bathurst, Orange and Katoomba.
“There has been a fair bit of interest so far and we have quite a few names down already,” club secretary Ray Ross said this week.
“We have had a lot of interest from our sister clubs in the other towns as well, which is good.
“The tournament is a good opportunity for all golfers because, if you aren’t playing so well at the moment, you have two opportunities to win on the Sunday with the stroke event as well as a stableford competition.”
Both stroke and handicap titles and A and B grades will be fought out on the second day of the event over 18 holes in addition to the stableford competition and a team event will also be decided.
Each golfer will also have the opportunity to take part in a par three shoot-out on the first hole.
The winners from each group of 10 entrants to play-off for the shoot-out title at the conclusion of the main event.
“The course is looking very good at the moment,” Ross said. “It really did need a bit of a bath, and fortunately that’s exactly what it got over the past week.
“By the time the tournament rolls around it should be at its best.
“A few people have said that this is as green and as good as the course has ever looked so with some warm weather to help the grass grow, things should be perfect.”
