Cricket title a Tigers triumph

01 Apr, 2010 09:17 AM
THE ORC Tigers have been crowned the Bathurst District Cricket Association second grade premiers after a 107-run victory over Bathurst City Blue at Morse Park 2 on Sunday.

Tigers captain Adam Bromfield produced his third century in as many weeks and while it was not as polished as his previous tons it was enough to give ORC a dominant first innings lead which City Blue could not chase down.

In bright and sunny conditions on Saturday it was City Blue captain Adam Lewis who won the toss and elected to send the Tigers in on a Morse Park 2 pitch that had be kind to ORC side in previous weeks.

"They put us into bat which I didn't understand, I suppose they thought with Hanrahan in their side they thought we would hand it to them," Bromfield said.

"We would have batted without a doubt, I don't think you win a toss in a grand final to bowl first in a grand final."

It was the City Blue bowling attack led by Ryan Smiles (4-40 off 18 overs) and Hanrahan (2-73 off 24) which looked to have the upper hand with ORC 2-27.

However, it was captain reliable, Bromfield, who came to the Tigers' rescue dispatching nine boundaries on his way to his third consecutive century.

A fortnight ago Bromfield scored his first century of season racking up 103 in the Tigers 53-run win over Rugby Union. At the time he laughed at suggestions he might score three centuries in a row, yesterday, after it came to fruition he still preferred to congratulate the other players in the team than focus on his efforts.

"I didn't get the runs during the year, we made the semi-finals based on a solid team effort it just so happened that I got the runs during the finals series," Bromfield said."Like I said all week there are other guys that could have scored the runs, it is just so that I did."Bromfield (106) stayed at the crease for the majority of ORC's innings as Wayne Sellers (20), Adrian Mielke (16), Myles Emanual (20), Justin Fardon (20) and Darryl Gibson (25) tried their best to form a big partnership.

But with City Blue's James Leven (2-65 off 15) also picking up wickets that partnership never came as ORC finished their innings bowled out for 274 in the 87th over. "I did have a bit of luck out there," Bromfield said. "I hit a boundary to get 99 and then top edged a pull shot but no one was with in reach to catch it."

Despite Bromfield's amazing innings, City Blue looked like they had everything under control as Damian Morgan (46) and Nathan Foran (10) opened the batting with a 54-run stand. However, when Jacob Bognuda (2-8 off 11) removed Morgan and Jeremy Cleary (0) with consecutive balls the match was turned on it's head. At 3-62 Troy Sargent (22) was elevated up the order and with Leven (34) at the other end helped get City Blue's total to 121 before the next wicket fell. That wicket was a sign of things to come as City Blue lost their last seven wickets for just 46 runs.
