WITH all the rain at the weekend there were fears that the semi- finals wouldn’t go ahead in Bathurst.
However on Sunday morning the sun was shining and it was game on with third-placed Oberon United playing fourth-placed Bathurst City Redtops.
As players arrived it soon became apparent that United did not have a goalkeeper for the match. The call for a volunteer for the tough job was answered by team vice-captain, Clint.
The match was a fast see-sawing affair, with many attacking raids made by both sides and both defensive lines often tested.
Unfortunately the day did not belong to Oberon who went down 3-2 in a good, hard and fair game.
One of the highlights for the day was the second goal to Oberon, a lovely corner taken by the magician.
You could see the surgeon lining it up as the ball came closer to the box, then bang, off the top of his head, leaving the keeper with no chance. It was a beautiful piece of soccer.
This team has done a wonderful job this year, being in the bottom two after four rounds before going on to finish third in the competition.
The team make-up was a combination of players from last year and many new players to the club. Some of these were as young as 15 years old, playing in an all-age competition.
The team will celebrate the year by meeting at the picnic area of the dam this Saturday, around midday. There wil be a spot of fishing and we will revisit the many wonderful stories of how goals were scored and how many great tackles were made.
The coach said all players could be proud of their achievements this year. The team presentation will be held on Saturday, October 18, at the showground. It would be great if all can make it for a great night and to celebrate a great year.
