 Cobb’s back in Calare

Cobb’s back in Calare

26 Aug, 2010 12:10 PM
Not even Nationals candidate John Cobb expected his huge win in the seat of Calare in Saturday’s federal election.

Mr Cobb was returned as the Member for Calare very convincingly at all 109 polling places

In results returned yesterday, Mr Cobb earned 42,535 first preference votes, or 52.63 per cent of the overall vote.

Labor’s Kevin Duffy has received 23,699 first preference votes, or 29.32 per cent of votes, followed by The Greens Jeremy Buckingham with 4528 votes. Independent Paul Blanch polled fourth with 3782, followed by Independent Karen Romano on 3020. Christian Democrat Jessyca Norsworthy earned 1683 first preference votes, followed by Independent Macgregor Ross on 1576.

Mr Cobb cleaned up at all polling booths in the Oberon area, with votes counted on election day giving him 62.93 per cent of first preference votes at the Black Springs polls, 52.94 per cent at Burraga polls, 57.32 per cent at O’Connell polls, and a huge 61.70 per cent at the Oberon polls.

Mr Cobb said he was "quite delighted" with the results, and said it was quite gratifying that he had increased his margin over Labor.

He told the Oberon Review he believed some of the reason for the large margin was the fact that the people of Calare were not comfortable with the coalition between Labor and The Greens.

Mr Cobb said that it was very humbling that the people of Calare supported him, and was thrilled with Oberon’s support.

"Oberon was very kind to me, and I shall not let them down," he said.

Mr Cobb said he plans very soon to travel around and visit all the mayors of Calare, including Mayor Keith Sullivan, who Mr Cobb said was nice enough to call and congratulate him.

He said he is very aware of Oberon’s water worries and also the town’s bid to obtain an aged care facility.

Mr Cobb said he is very supportive of Oberon’s bid, and is very impressed with the plans for the facility.
