Skills such as knitting, crocheting, cooking or even sewing on a button may have some Oberon women shaking in their boots, and it's that fact that made local Veronica Hodges want to rekindle such lost skills.
Veronica has always wanted to teach women skills for the home that have been lost, as she has a certificate in sewing but she said there is more to it than that.
She said it was also the wish of her late husband, Ron Lardner, that she begin this group she has wanted to form for so many years.
“I have ate, slept and dreamt this for some time,” she said. “It's just to get back to basics, because women are losing these basic skills.”
Veronica is forming a group of women who are keen to learn some skills for homemaking, and already has quite a collection.
Karen Sales of Storm Water Cafe has come on board, offering not only her culinary knowledge for those who want to learn to cook, but also offered the cafe as a location for the group to meet. Pauline Lewis is offering her skills to teach some knitting and crocheting.
Some of the young women in the town are getting involved, such as Amanda Dwyer, who says she is coming to learn all the skills on offer.
Though the girls reckon Amanda may even be able to teach them some hair styling skills while they are at it!
Amy is another keen new starter, who has moved to the district with two young daughters, and says she is being pressured to mend her partner Scott Curran's torn flannelettes and RM shirts, but her sewing skills are non-existent.
The girls are keen to learn other skills too, such as plumbing and changing a tyre.
Veronica is inviting women in the community to come along and become involved, and to bring suggestions of skills they could learn.
More importantly, women are invited to come along just for a chat and some company.
“Someone just may want to come along and enjoy. They can just come and observe,” said Karen.
“We want people to come and feel like they are participating,” said Veronica.
The group plans to meet every first and third Monday of every month, beginning in September, and women of all ages are invited to come and have a fun time for free.
The group is also looking for anyone who may have some leftover wool, knitting needles, material and so on that might help them in their activities.
