Water meeting with minister

04 Feb, 2010 08:37 AM
A very important meeting has been arranged for February 15 with New South Wales Minister for Water the Hon Phillip Costa.

I will be introducing a deputation from council led by Mayor Keith Sullivan and representatives of the timber industry in Oberon to discuss the much talked about Oberon water supply.

Both council and industry representatives have put a lot of work and thought into solutions to the current problem.

It is important that they get the opportunity to spell them out to the Minister and his advisers.

In the short term we need to deal with the current problem as the dam level approaches the 10 percent level and set up an agreement that is transparent and fair to all parties.

Earlier this week I paid a visit to the Oberon Men’s Shed located in one of the pavilions at the Oberon Showground.

Recently I was able to secure some State Government funding to assist the committee renovating the pavilion to cater for their needs.

The Men’s Shed concept is spreading right around Australia and is basically aimed at getting men together to discuss common concerns particularly about health and social issues etc.

There is no set formula for mens’ sheds. It is up to each local community to operate as they see fit and to address their particular needs.

They are a great social outlet and certainly a refuge for those men living on their own to seek friendship and company.

Some get involved in craft activities and make toys for needy children etc, others get involved in a range of recreational and games activities.

The Oberon committee is doing a great job and are doing much of the construction work themselves but with the $20,000 grant they will be able to upgrade the facilities using local businesses to assist.

I would strongly urge men in Oberon who have been holding back to make contact with the Oberon Men’s Shed group.

David McMurray is the spokesman for the shed and can provide more detailed information to locals.

Oberon Council has been very supportive of the concept and of course has made the pavilion available as well as providing other in kind support.

I was disappointed that I missed last week’s Australia Day celebrations in Oberon.

It is the first time in 10 years that I have not been able to make it because of conflicting engagements.

Certainly reading the details of the community awards the Oberon community is producing outstanding citizens right through from the Young Citizen of the year to the Local Legend.

What a great story Chic Tosic has to tell. Another wonderful example of how Australia has benefited from immigration.
