Watch the footy and help fight cancer

15 Jul, 2010 10:42 AM
It is time for the community to gather together for a great day of footy and while they are at it, to raise awareness and funds for men's cancer.

This is the invitation from the organisers of the Call to Arms football day to be held on Saturday, July 24, where the community is invited to come and watch footy for a good cause.

Junior league's Troy Brien, senior league's Ian Christie-Johnston, Vicki Walsh and Mary Jacobs-Maloney are hard at work organising a fantastic day full of football, raffles and fund-raising for the local branch of Can Assist.

The day will include junior and senior football games, kicking off with the Under 6s at 9am, with the senior league Centenary Coal Cup game against Portland to start at 2:30pm.

All proceeds from the gate will go to Call to Arms, which is raising awareness of cancers that affect men.

“In rugby league, many players and supporters are touched by cancer, whether it is a relative or even themselves,” said Mr Christie-Johnston.

The Oberon branch of Can Assist will be at the grounds on the day, so locals are invited to go and say hello to Max Sward, Katie Maher and Kevin Campbell and find out what they are all about. It is also hoped there will be a static broadcast of local radio station High Top FM at the grounds.

There will be monster raffles, which has been overwhelmingly supported with prize donations from local businesses including Bath-urst Toyota, Cut and Groove, Oberon Engineering, Maw-hoods Supa IGA, Mawhoods Mitre 10, Taya Booth, Oberon Senior League, Moorhead Engineering, Oberon Indust-rial and Farming, Shell Service Station, Jenolan Caves, the Western Plains Zoo, Oberon Smash Repairs, Rosedale Gifts, the Caltex Service Station, Macquarie Day Spa and Lithgow Embroidery. Tickets for the great prizes in the monster raffle will also be sold up the street from now on.

The senior league boys will be playing in a special jersey to mark the occasion. The jerseys will then be either bought by the players, or will be auctioned to raise funds for the cause.

The fun does not stop after the football, with a kids disco from 5pm until 7pm.

Meanwhile the raffles will be drawn and the special jerseys will be auctioned along with other Tigers supporters gear, both junior and senior.

Come along on Saturday, July 24, be a part of the community and help raise awareness for men's cancer.
