OBERON made an important new friendship with China last week, meeting with delegates from the city of Chizhou to pave the way for possible exports in the future.
The Chizhou delegates visited Oberon to learn more about the Oberon area, particularly our industry and agriculture. Their region is similar to ours, with agriculture, a booming tourism industry and forestry.
Economic development officer, Mike Massey said the purpose of the visit was to form a platform for a relationship with China, with both areas showing what they have to offer.
“Due to the enormous size of China, their natural resources are stretched,” he said.
“They are looking for other countries to get involved in their industries.”
The Chizhou Province mainly produce pork, but their consumption of red meat is increasing. In addition, during their visit, the delegates said that they had experienced difficulty breeding and growing out sheep and goats.
The delegate also said they traditionally use cotton as fibre, but are hoping to use more wool in the future.
The delegates also showed interest in purchasing a farm or property to be used as a recreational farm for Chinese buyers to visit while in Australia.
The delegation was impressed with the Oberon area. Deputy-mayor Zhang Xiasheng said that despite the short nature of their visit, they found Oberon to be welcoming and hospitable.
The delegation met with Member for Bathurst Gerard Martin and members of council, as well as representatives from the range of industries around the district, such as members from engineering and agricultural industries, as well as members from the local abattoir.
Mr Massey said that the meeting was a great opportunity for Oberon.
"We need to diversify our industry and find new markets, and we have expertise in our area that may be able to help them," he said.
"It was a fact finding mission for both parties, and we may find that in the future we can assist one another, whether it be technical or in product."
The Chinese delegate also urged anyone interested in dealing with China to contact their representative in Sydney.
Mr Massey said any local industries or groups wanting more information can contact him at the Visitor Information Centre on (02) 63298210.
