A total of 16,000 brown trout fry were put into four district waterways on Sunday in the second stage of the annual fish restocking programme.
The fry were put into the Duckmaloi, Fish and Campbells Rivers and Brisbane Valley by teams of Oberon branch of the Central Acclimatisation Society.
A total of 22,000 rainbow trout fry were put in the same locations three weeks ago, and the program will be completed with the insertion of 20,000 rainbow fry in Oberon Dam about Christmans time.
The quantities are about the same as last year's restocking. The fish, which are supplied by the NSW Department of Primary Industry, are trucked from Ebor, near Armidale, overnight and put in the local rivers the following morning.
Peter Byrom, treasurer of the Oberon CAS branch, said the quality of the fry was among the best he had seen "for quite a while."
"They arrived in really great condition after a journey of about 8-10 hours," he said. "They used to be trucked during the day, but bringing them in the cool overnight has brought much better results."
The CAS Oberon branch held its annual meeting last week, and all officers were re-elected unopposed: president, Kevin McGrath;secretary, Peter Young' treasurer, Peter Byrom.
