The capsule – which was sealed and required some professional assistance to open – contained memorabilia dating back to January 1928, as well as other artefacts which were added in 1991 after earlier renovations revealed the capsule in the first place.

“We knew we had one here somewhere but we weren’t exactly sure of its whereabouts,” said RSL manager Rachael Sharp.

“We were not sure which wall it was in, but eventually it was found in the wall behind the memorial.”

Rachael explained that the large box contained a National Advocate and Western Times from Thursday February 2, 1928, a Sydney Morning Herald from January 31 of the same year, and a Lithgow Mercury, also from February 2, 1928.

“It also contained a list of all the locals who served in the Great War (World War I),” Rachael explained.

Upon the original discovery of the historical object during upgrades to the club in 1991, two copies of this very publication were added to the box – Oberon Reviews from April of that year.

In addition, there was a letter added to explain that the capsule had been opened, and gave a list of all those employed at the club at the time, something which will be repeated once more when the capsule is re-buried in the coming weeks.

“It will go back in – we will reseal the original capsule, and add another one to it,” Ms Sharp said.

“The older one is fairly full so we will create a new one as well, and put a copy of the Review in there, and type up a list of directors of the club going back into the 70s, and also add a letter similar to the one from 1991.”
