Top trainee field to chase prizemoney

26 Feb, 2009 09:15 AM
AROUND 45 trainee professional golfers from Sydney and surrounding districts are expected to hit off in the 14th Annual Oberon Trainee Pro-Am at Oberon Golf Club on Monday, March 2.

They will be competing for $4000 prizemoney in the big event thanks to the outstanding efforts of major sponsors Bird Legal and Chris Mc Ewen, supported by a host of Oberon people and businesses.

Trainee professionals are those young golfers aiming to develop a career by earning a living through golf.

They complete a three-year apprenticeship that includes playing golf, learning to run a business, coaching, and learning the rules.

Two PGA members will be among the special guests for the big weekend of golf - Glenn Whittle and Kurt Stegbauer, of the Sutherland Shire Golf Academy, who will bring a group of juniors from Sydney to contest the tournament.

This year the focus will be on encouraging juniors to play. Special competitions and prizes will be offered on each day. This might be the beginning of a career in golf for a local player, so come along and join the fun.

This tournament weekend will also highlight the ongoing support provided by the PGA Chaplaincy services of Graham Lawrence, who was the Uniting Church Minister at Oberon from 1991-1997.

Chaplains provide support to PGA members throughout their life and career with such things as friendship, counselling, crisis support, Christian ministry and funeral and marriage services. They are there to help and offer support wherever possible.

The weekend program will include:

Saturday, February 28 – Guest join in the local members competition.

Sunday, March 1 – Four person team ambrose from 12 noon followed by a barbecue and presentation of prizes. Cost - $30. This event is ideal for social players and those wishing to learn about the game.

Monday, March 2 – Trainee Pro-Am, 9am shotgun start. Players need to arrive at 8:30am to be ready for 9am start. Cost - $30. Open to all players with some golf experience.

Join us for a great weekend of golf. If you are interested in playing please contact the Oberon Golf Club or phone organisers Barry Lang on 6336 1352 or Graham Lawrence on 0427 409 069.
