NATIONAL Alpaca Week will be celebrated in Oberon district with open days at Helmshore Manor, Black Springs.
Stud owners Jill and Brian Ross and children Alex and Isabelle will be opening the gates to their 10 hectare property "Bolholt" on Felltimber Road.
Mrs Ross said everyone will be invited to inspect the stud they have established including 34 quality alpaca bred from an infusion of sought after Jollimont Stud, Victorian bloodlines over the past few years.
As a lead-in to the open days ( on Sunday, May 3 and Friday to Sunday, May 8-10 at Black Springs) Mrs Ross said the stud has been preparing its breeding herd for the big day, including recent show outings.
Ms Ross said her family has been interested in the exotic farming of good quality alpaca since she and her husband returned to live in Australia on the Central Coast about 12 years ago.
She said they were fortunate to be encouraged by an enthusiastic now 19-year-old Alex Ross to become involved with alpaca and they have not looked back since then.
Mrs Ross said the family is caring for the herd at Black Springs having bred up numbers mostly top line females by utilising the bloodlines of Peter and Narelle Tulip, who currently have their 40 strong stud herd of alpaca on agistment at Helmshore Manor, as they plan to move their herd to the Oberon district.
Helmshore stud has been concentrating on breeding stock. But they have not overlooked the potential to exploit the quality fleeces they have been growing out at Rankins Springs. The stud's alpaca yarn has a market in Victoria while quality darker fleeces go to Italy, Mrs Ross said.
Mrs Ross said daughter Isabelle Ross, 10, has been preparing for the open days by exhibiting a weanling male Winter Flame a June, 2008 drop son of Ecamp Kikuyu Billabong, their main stud Alpaca, by exhibiting at the recent Castle Hill Show.
"Isabelle did well leading Winter Flame to be placed third as a junior handler," Ms Ross said.
"But we were disappointed because Isa-belle planned to take Winter Flame to the Royal Sydney Show.
"We were about to go to Sydney when we noticed Winter Flame had been bitten by a snake. While he's recovered now we missed out on showing in Sydney."
Mrs Ross said Isabelle who is one of 10 students at Black Springs School is looking forward to attending Oberon High School next year to take advantage of the Agricultural Science courses at secondary school level.
There is an open invitation to attend the stud's four open days in May with the catering to be provided by Black Springs School supporters.
