Deadly funnel web spiders are posing a threat to Oberon and district residents with recent heatwave conditions driving them from their burrows at night as they seek shelter in cool, moist areas inside homes.
To combat spider problems, particularly Funnel Web infestations, the Rotary Club of Katoomba is operating a nationwide “Dangerous Spiders Public Awareness” lifesaving community service project.
The project is aimed at educating people on the ever-present danger posed by funnel webs, red-backs and other species.
Co-ordinator of the project is Rex Gilroy, an entomologist with 52 years research experience in spider research.
Rex operates the club's dangerous spiders hotline (02 4782 3441) where concerned home-owners can obtain helpful advice on any spider problems they may have.
A full-colour “Spider Awareness” booklet with every species commonly found around the home photographed in colour, together with spider life-histories and habits is also available.
Included is advice for parents of young children on how to teach them about spider danger, and a step-by-step illustrated first-aid procedure for spider-bite [ie the pressure-immobilisation technique also used for snake-bite].
The booklet can be obtained by sending $10 to The Rotary Club of Katoomba “Dangerous Spiders Public Awareness”, P0 Box 54, Katoomba, NSW 2780.
The club members hope the Oberon community will take full advantage of the unique life-saving service offered by the club.
