Shed celebrates year of achievement

30 Jul, 2010 08:47 AM
Oberon Men’s Shed has just celebrated 12 months since it was formally incorporated.

In his address to the Shed’s Annual General Meeting on July 27, outgoing president, Ian Davis, said that the Shed had made great advances in the year since the last general election.

He outlined the Shed’s achievements, including completing stage one in the rebuilding of the Shed, becoming financially viable, progressing plans towards completing stage two of the Shed, utilising a major grant provided by the State Government through local member Gerard Martin, dramatically increasing membership, receiving high levels of recognition within Oberon’s community through Shed members’ enthusiasm in rebuilding the shed.

Special thanks went to the staff of the Oberon Review for unfailingly providing publicity about Shed activities.

The Shed also onducted a men’s health seminar for the village in conjunction with Rotary Club of Oberon and the Oberon Hospital Health Advisory Council that proved to be hugely successful.

Members also got the pot-bellied stove up and running before the arrival of the chilled winds of winter!

During 2009-10 the Shed has welcomed many dignitaries through its doors.

These included Keith Sullivan, Mayor of Oberon, Bruce Fitzpatrick, Retired General Manager, Oberon Council, Representatives of Men’s Sheds Australia, our umbrella organisation, Gerard Martin, State Member, Bob Debus, Federal Member, Julia Kurtz of the Oberon Review and many more including State Health Workers.

The members received those visitors with good humour and enthusiasm. They showed keen interest in all Shed activities.

Mr Davis also thanked Vice-President, Roy Smith for his hard work and dedication to Oberon Men’s Shed and the Secretary/Treasurer David McMurray for shuffling the paperwork.

In his closing remarks Ian thanked the general committee for their input and members for their company, without whom the Shed couldn’t survive.

The newly elected committee comprises: Ian Davis, President, Roy Smith, Vice-President, David McMurray, Secretary/Treasurer/Public Officer with George Knight, Michael Graham and Michael Massey making up the general committee.

The meeting concluded with a Christmas in July themed lunch. Goodies were provided by the men themselves with particular thanks to Connie Ball who made a wonderful slice and a fantastic Santa cake and Angela Straminoldi for her terrific contribution of a couple of bakes.

The lunch generated hoots and hollers and light-hearted banter for which the Shed is fast gaining a reputation.

A special thanks is also extended to Veronica Hodges, partner of the late and great Ron Lardner who called on the Shed during the festivities bearing a donation of many of Ron’s favourite workshop tools.

Oberon Men’s Shed is open every Tuesday from 10am until 3pm. Ian Davis extends a personal invitation to Oberon’s men to call in and have a cuppa and a chat or stay awhile and enjoy the warm companionship of our members. You may just make some new friends.
