Last week, Oberon Rotary Club welcomed some relatively new Oberon residents, as well as a few who have been here a while, at a special Rotary meeting where Oberon’s attractions and, at a more pragmatic level, various local services were highlighted.
In addition to Oberon information, guests were given information on a range of local and international Rotary programs. A display of Rotary through the years was particularly interesting – who remembers the potato growing fundraisers out along Lowes Mount Rd? Also featured were details of the “Shelterbox” – an early response after disasters providing dry shelter, a warm bed, light and heat, clean water, cooking aids and tools. These have proven critical in minimising casualties following recent catastrophes in Haiti and Chile.
A highlight was the presentation by Horst Sjostedt, the man behind the hydroponic tomato-growing enterprise on Albion Street. Horst conveyed both a great knowledge and a passion for cultivating his “red ladies”. To maximise the growth of these special tomatoes (seeds are imported from The Netherlands) the environment is precisely controlled. In addition, skilled workers undertake a range of horticultural practices to ensure the tomatoes fulfil their potential in terms of quantity and quality of production.
Overall, an informative evening – and enjoyed by all who attended.

Bowelscan kits are available from Oberon pharmacy this month. The kits provide an early warning guide to the symptoms of bowel cancer – one of the most common internal cancers affecting about one-in-20 men and women each year. Although bowel cancer is relatively common, it can be successfully treated if detected early.
Is it worth the risk? Get a kit from Oberon Pharmacy - then do the test! Ten dollars covers the kit, associated pathology tests and medical feedback.
